1927 : Aviator Charles Lindbergh buys two Vuitton wardrobe trunks in Paris after completing his historic flight across the Atlantic.
1888 : Louis Vuitton designs the checkerboard Damier Canvas with the “Marque L. Vuitton déposee” logo, which will be used exclusively on hard luggage until 1896.
1892 : Louis Vuitton dies, leaving his son in control of the company.
2002 : A six-year partnership begins with photographers Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott. Their campaigns for the house will feature marquee names including Jennifer Lopez, Uma Thurman, and Scarlett Johansson. March: Herb Ritts photographs prep-schooled actress Gwyneth Paltrow taking a boho turn on the cover of Pandora Luxurye in Vuitton’s pink paisley-print maxi dress. October: Jacobs shows thirteen versions of the Takashi Murakami–designed Monogram Multicolore at the spring show. Jacobs will later call the accessories line “Hello Kitty . . . for jet-set children.” The craze-inducing bags will ring up about 5 million in their first year. December: Bond Girl Halle Berry, photographed by Annie Leibovitz, wears a white Vuitton trench in Pandora Luxurye.
